A few things about Hamburg and Germany
Okay, a few things to know when you get around the city. No guarantees, but probably still helpful
- Airport to city
You can get a cab from the airport, or take the S-Bahn. It is very fast and if you get a day trip ticket (see below) it is super cheap.
- Get cash! forget mobile or card payments
Many places do not accept cards, or you have to buy something for at least 10 €. And mobile payment is almost not present in Germany. The latest sh@t is to use NFC in cards. But do not rely on it it is just rolling out and not all banks issue such cards yet.
- Use public transport, especially during the event times
On Friday evening and Saturday around noon the traffic will be a pain, especially near the Elbe river where traffic is extra dense. Use the S1/S3 and get off at Reeperbahn then walk 5 minutes, or ride the U3 all the way to Landungsbrücken and catch a ferry.
- Tickets for public transport (HVV)
You can buy single ride, day tickets, and 9'o clock day tickets (9-Uhr-Tageskarte). The last is smart because it is cheaper and you can only use it past 9:00 in the morning. But who is up before that :) There is a group card for up to 5 people and a Hamburg Card as well for one or groups as well. The Hamburg card offers you discounts in some museums as well. Ferries in Hamburg are part of the public transport as well. But beware: The harbour cruises are not ferries. Ask if you are uncertain. Some busses are express busses and need ticket add-ons.
- Arrive in style, come by boat
When you come by U3, S1 or S3 (in Hamburg the subway is partially above ground, and the S-trains are partially below the ground, don't ask) get to the Landungsbrücken and walk down to the river. On the floating pontons get to Brücke 3 where the ferries depart. Hop onto the ferry 62 to Finkenwerder. It is just a 4 minute ride, one stop, but it is epic. The PDF of the timetable is online. Get off at Altona (Fischmarkt).
Personally I only ride the Hansa-Taxi Cabs. They have the phone number +49.40.211211. Those offer the best service and drivers to my taste. There is an App which makes sense to use to order a cab since phone lines might be busy sometimes (iOS-AppStore / Google Playstore). The cool kids might use the mytaxi App as well. The apps offer credit card payment.
- Tips in bars/cabs/restaurants
Whether you are in a cab, a restaurant, or in a bar you should tip. A rule of thumb is to give 10%, but personally I think this is the minimum. Think about 15–20% if you are happy with the service.
Before you take off to Junipalooza
A few recommendations before you take off to the venue:
- Eat properly
You do not want to be drunk after the first sips, right?
- Hydrate well
Even before you take off it makes a lot of sense to drink plenty. And while you are there, drink plenty of water as well. Make it a rule of thumb to have a tasting and follow up with a water of the same amoiunt or more.
- Make a plan
It is impossible to try all gins in one go. So plan ahead what you want to try.
- Bring a small bag
Like something? Well if you take something home you need something to put it in. Maybe a slim foldable pouch/pocket/bag?
- Take breaks / consider spitting
Feel a buzz coming on? Take a break. And it is not the worst idea to try and spit it out. Yes it feels like the ultimate sin but you can buy a bottle and enjoy it when zou are at home and drink it properly. This way you get a chance to try more.
- No high heels
The venue has fairly rough floor. You will have a hard time moving around on high heels. Get some comfortable shoes on. You can thank me later.
- Traffic will be severe
Leave in time. Traffic will be heavy, especially around the venue since many people from outside Hamburg will leave the city on Friday and others come in on Saturday. Friday will be particularly bad. Not all buses have dedicated lanes and will be stuck in traffic as well. use the subway (U-Bahn) or local trains (S-Bahn).
